When the moose rut happens in Idaho — and why we named a drop after it

Älg is Swedish for moose. We named the brand after the animal before we'd ever had one walk out in front of the truck on a back road in the snow — and we named our October drop after the three weeks when that animal stops being invisible.

When it happens

Idaho Fish and Game puts the moose rut from late September into early October, with the whole breeding period running roughly four to six weeks. Elk rut through September. Deer come later, in November.

So if you're trying to pick the window: the last week of September through the first couple of weeks of October is the heart of it for moose in Idaho.

What actually changes

For most of the year a bull moose is a remarkably good disappearing act. Seven feet at the shoulder, a thousand pounds, and you can walk past one in willows without knowing it. They're crepuscular, they hold tight, and they don't want to be seen.

The rut undoes all of that. Bulls move in daylight. They travel further and more carelessly than at any other point in the year. They thrash brush, they vocalise, and they stop being careful about where they stand. The biggest animal in the forest becomes, briefly, the easiest one to find.

That's the window. It closes as fast as it opens.

A real warning

Idaho Fish and Game is blunt about this and so are we: rutting bulls are dangerous. They become increasingly aggressive during the breeding period and will charge a person or a dog they read as a threat.

Stay at least 30 yards back. Watch for the tells — a lowered head, pinned-back ears, the hair standing up along the neck, any vocalising. If you see those, you are already closer than you should be. Keep dogs leashed; a loose dog near a rutting bull is how people get hurt.

A cow with a calf deserves the same distance for different reasons.

Why it's a drop and not a product line

Most clothing brands run on a calendar that has nothing to do with the outdoors — spring, summer, back-to-school, holiday. We wanted ours to run on something real.

Rut Season is three pieces, made once, for the few weeks the name refers to. Next October the window moves a little, because it always does, and the mark on the back moves with it.

It's a smaller idea than a seasonal collection. We think that's the point.
